Harvey J. Stahl was born in Dallas, Tex. in 1941. In the 1970's he worked at The Cloisters and the Metropolitan Museum and taught art history at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, before joining the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 1981. Stahl specialized in the history of medieval manuscript illumination, and the Romanesque, Gothic and later Byzantine periods of art.
